This is a genuinely remarkable book. Here, Thomas De Quincey inaugurates the great tradition of writing about substance addiction and psychedelic experiences, at the time when Charles Dickens was still in grade school. It will sound rather silly, the ...more

There is a peculiar pleasure in reading books about writing. It is the only craft in which the manual to do it is an example of the craft itself. And since writers tend to be on the eloquent side, they are very good at making their particular pursuit ...more

As the 2024 election looms, it is a small comfort to me that the world has long been governed badly. The First World War itself was bloodbath resulting from insane miscalculation and callous disregard for human life. It was settled with a petty and v ...more

It seems rather heartless to say so, but the publisher who decided to hold back this novel in the wake of Steinbeck’s enormous success with The Grapes of Wrath probably did it a kindness. A book with such a similar plot and subject would seem derivat ...more

You're welcome! No, I haven't yet, but I think I will read them someday.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & Happy New Year to you and your family!
Let your cherished dreams come true in 2019 :-)

Nice to virtually meet you, too! Valencia's a beautiful city.

I greatly enjoyed looking through your shelves and reading some of your reviews. I look forward to sharing our opinions on books!

As a matter of fact, I did know that about the name sherry! Most English names for fortified wines come from the places of importation. They were popular because they hold up better under poor shipping conditions than do regular wines.

And the same to you! Unfortunately, almost everything is closed right now, so we're just puttering around in cafés, haha. But the sherry is excellent! I didn't know this, but "sherry" is named after Jerez, a place in Spain where we are now.

[is it correct to say I like your taste? cause on the second thought it sounded ...cannibalistic!]"
Thanks! And I hope I taste good :-).

Thanks for offering your friend request! And I'll try my very best!

No problem; and I do too!

Ted, I'm only too happy to accept! In fact, I thought we were already friends, so I was surprised by the request!
And I think the world-saving is going pretty well!

And yes, there are too many good books to pick a favorite--not that this is a bad thing!

Hello! My best piece of advice is just to establish a regular routine, and stick to it. But there are many who read a whole lot more than I do!
